It is one of the most commonly used types of fabrics in the world. This textile is chemically organic, which means that it does not contain any synthetic compounds.
Cotton is simply a natural fiber that comes from the seedpod of the cotton plant and is used to make many textile types.
It is derived from the fibers surrounding the seeds of cotton plants, which emerge in a round, fluffy formation once the seeds are mature.

The use of cotton for fabric is known to date to prehistoric times; fragments of cotton is dated to the fifth millennium BC have been found in the Indus Valley Civilization, as well as textile remnants dated back to 6000 BC in Peru.
Although cultivated since antiquity, it was the invention of the cotton gin that lowered the cost of production that led to its widespread use, and it is the most widely used natural fiber cloth in clothing today.
It’s possible that people in the Americas used cotton for textiles as long ago as 5500 BC, but it’s clear that cotton cultivation was widespread throughout Mesoamerica since at least 4200 BC.
Types Of Cotton Fabrics /Textile
Cotton fabrics are a great choice for dressmaking. They are widely available and come in a huge range of textures – from lightweight lawn and voile to heavy-weight velvets and moleskin.
But with so many different types of cotton textiles to choose from, it can be difficult making a final decision. So, this is the different types of cotton.
Cambric
Cambric is plain-weave cotton that is fine, smooth, and firm-textured as it’s closely woven.
Pima Cotton
It is an ultra-soft textile that incorporates long cotton fibers. Most types of cotton use relatively short fibers.
But Pima is one of a few kinds of cotton that are considered to be extra-long-staple cotton, which means that they are composed of fibers that are longer than 34 millimeters.
Supima Cotton
Supima cotton is a superior type of cotton grown in the USA. It represents less than 1% of cotton grown in the world.
Brushed cotton
This fabric is generally medium-weight and has surface fibres that are brushed on one side giving a soft, warm feel.
Canvas Cotton Textile
This is a medium- to heavy-weight, a plain-weave cotton textile that’s extremely strong, sturdy, and durable.
Chambray Cotton
A light- to medium-weight plain-weave cotton fabric that has a subtle variation in color between the warp and weft threads.
Cotton lawn
Cotton lawn is a thin, relatively sheer, high thread count textile which is made by using a tight weave, but with a finer thread.

Cotton fabric is popular because it’s easy to care for and comfortable. It is also easy to clean, it can be laundered or dry cleaned.
It withstands high water temperatures but is prone to shrinkage. Even with pre-washed fabrics, most cotton fabrics shrink during the first wash, so it’s imperative to prewash again before sewing.
In the case of printed kinds of cotton, most manufacturers recommend dry cleaning to preserve the design of the material.
